Volunteers
Market House Theatre has over 300 volunteers each year that help us create live theatre showcasing the talent of our community. All the actors in the plays, technical crews backstage and in the control booth and ushers taking tickets and shows audience members to their seats are volunteers! Here is how to get involved and receive the benefits of being a volunteer at MHT.
ACTORS – Click on the Auditions & Casting Page for specific information.
Auditions dates for plays and they casting information is posted on the auditions page. Auditionees can check out a script of the upcoming shows with a $10 deposit. When you return the script we refund your deposit. Learn all you can about the play so you are familiar with it when you come to auditions. Fill out an audition form making sure to list all your conflicts (days you cannot be at rehearsal). Generally the director will hold open auditions ( that means that everyone in the community is welcome to audition) most of the time you can come in and watch the auditions if you want to check it out before actually auditioning. Some directors audition privately by appointment which allows them to work with a very small group at a time instead of a large group. Auditions ususally are held Monday and Tuesday evenings. If there is a large group of people auditioning the director will schedule a “call back”. This is a smaller group of people that the director hasn’t decided on, but wants to take another look at before casting the show. Generally the cast list is posted on a Friday of the auditions week and rehearsals start promptly the following Monday. MHT provides the costumes for the performers if we are doing a show with specialized costumes. We ask the performers to provide their own clothes as costumes if the show is set in present day. Actors have to provide their own shoes -generally black or brown dress shoes for the males and character shoes or dark shoes for females.
TECHNICAL CREWS/CONSTRUCTION CREW
Working on the stage crew helping to change the scenery, running the light board, the sound board, followspot, or helping with props can be a lot of fun without the weeks of rehearsal it takes to perform in a play. Generally the crew comes to the final week of rehearsals to watch and become familiar with the show. MHT staff will train you how to operate the lighting board, sound board and follow spot and give you time to practice before we get to dress rehearsals. Crews work the Sunday Technical rehearsal (which is a rehearsal with the actors where the crew gets to rehearse what they do for the show) Dress rehearsals are generally Monday and Tuesday evenings, Final Dress or Preview is Wednesday evening and then we open on Thursday evening. Performances are generally Thursday through Sunday for 2 weeks for a non musical and 3 weeks for a musical. Youth productions may open on Thursday morning with a school matinee. Crew who work for youth productions should check for daytime school matinee performances as well as the evening shows and weekend matinees. Props and construction crews for a show are needed as well. If you like going out and hunting for special objects or doing craft work to create items for the show than props might be right up your alley! Set construction crews work during the daytime hours and on weekends to build and paint the sets. Costume construction crew takes fabric home along with patterns from the theatre and returns the costumes back for fittings by the Costume coordinator Janice Peterson**All persons interested in crews should contact Business Manager Marsha Cash 270-444-6828 ext. 111 to set up an interview time so she can tell you what positions are available for upcoming shows.
USHERS
Market House Theatre uses Shiftboard to schedule or ushers for plays. Ushering takes about 45 minutes before the performance and you get to watch the show for free.

OFFICE
If you like helping with mailings, stuffing envelopes or helping us check ticket stubs against the chart then you might want to become an office volunteer. Just a couple hours a week or to let us know to call when we have a big mailing to get out is a big help for the theatre and lots of fun meeting people as well. ** Contact Business Manager Marsha Cash at 270-444-6828 ext. 111 for information.
